The secret that protects the monks and gives them longevity...

A shield against cancer is the holy diet "No meat all year round, lots of vegetables and fruits. We strictly observe fasting. It's a simple, healthy, fat-free diet."

This is the secret that protects the Saint monks from cancer as well as from other diseases and offers them a long life, the monk at the Koutloumousios Monastery of Mount Athos Father Moses told "NEA".

The monks' diet, in addition to being faithful to the rules of the Church, also proves to be anti-cancer, as scientists have found. The monks of Agioreite consume their food in moderation, while characteristics of their diet are the alternation of days with the consumption of food with and without oil, the periods of fasting, as well as the "ritual", which includes small meals at specific intervals.

"Restricted food consumption and calorie intake, without going beyond the limits of excess, has been proven by scientific research to increase life expectancy. At the same time, moderation and balanced meals contribute to the prevention of various diseases, especially diabetes. The intake of nutritional elements from fruits and vegetables is a very important parameter for good health, as is the limitation of meat consumption, which is responsible for the development of colon cancer.

In addition, the consumption of fruits and vegetables increases the body's antioxidants, protecting against prostate cancer", the vice-president of the Panhellenic Federation of Dietitians - Nutritionists, Dr. Michalis Khourdakis, tells "NEA".

"We eat in moderation. As long as we have to"... "Even on holidays, like Easter, we don't eat meat. We eat fish. And of course we often consume vegetables and fruits, many of which we produce ourselves", emphasizes the monk Moussis.

As he adds, however, "it is important that the monks of Agioreite do not eat too much even of the fasting products. We will eat in moderation. As much as it should. And this is because generally the monks live with the simple, the necessary, the frugal. And of course we must not forget that throughout the year, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, we fast and eat meals without oil"...

The cuisine in Oros is excellent, simple, delicious and at the same time beneficial for health. The cuisine of Agios Georgios is based on vegetables, legumes and what the sea that surrounds Mount Athos has to offer.
