Alonissos: The Greek Island Where Natural Beauty Meets Serenity!

Part of the Sporades complex, Alonissos is an authentic island mostly known for its incredible natural beauty and the amazing beaches. Chora is the most picturesque village in Alonissos island, located on top of a hill and offering great view to the Aegean Sea.

The main port of the island is located in the southeast and is called Patitiri. There is ferry and hydrofoil service from Patitiri to Volos, Agios Konstantinos, and Thessaloniki on the mainland and to the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros.

Beaches

Alonissos is a lovely island with much greenery and cozy beaches. Even in high season, it keeps a calm and relaxing atmosphere. The beaches around the island consist of pebbles.

Patitiri, Votsi and Roussoum Gialos are the most tourist places of the island, while the beaches are actually small coves with crystal water and relaxing atmosphere.

Accommodation

Patitiri, the port and capital village of Alonissos Greece, hosts the majority of accommodations on the island. Although there are some small hotels in the region, accommodation mostly includes traditional studios, self catering apartments and rooms for your Alonissos holidays. The seaside villages around the port, like Votsi and Roussoum Gialos, also offer cozy studios and rooms with all the necessary facilities and good access to the beach. Some hotels have luxury facilities, like pools.

Alonissos museums

The green island of Alonissos is unhabited since the Paleolithic times and has been an important trade center in the Classical period. It is home only to a single museum that depicts traditional life on the island. The Mavrikis Folklore Museum is perched on a hill overlooking Patitiri and aims to preserve the history of Alonissos.

The museum contains rooms with costumes, agricultural tools and objects from the daily life of the locals and vast collection of local artworks. The building is used for many art exhibitions which take place during the summer. You can access the museum on foot and enjoy the remarkable view to the picturesque harbour.

The National Marine Park

The National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades is the first of its kind in Greece. It includes Alonissos, six smaller islands, and several uninhabited rocky islets. This protected area is rich in marine life and serves as the habitat of the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), one of the rarest species in Europe, with only around 800 individuals remaining worldwide.

The Blue Cave

Along Alonissos’s wild and rocky coastline lie numerous small sea caves with mesmerizing, deep-blue waters. The most famous of these is the Blue Cave, where the crystal-clear water reflects the rugged cliffs above, creating a magical spectacle.

Tour boats often enter the cave, allowing visitors to dive into its shimmering waters. An unforgettable experience for anyone exploring the island.
