🍋 The origins of the lemon spoon sweet
Poros has long shared a deep bond with the lemon tree. This connection comes from its famous Lemon Forest, known in Greek as Lemonodasos.
The Lemon Forest is a truly enchanting place not only for its delicious products, but also for its serene walking paths. A walk through Lemonodasos takes about an hour, where lemon trees mingle with olives, pomegranates, and tall cypress trees, painting a lush and colorful landscape.
Recognized by UNESCO as a landscape of outstanding natural beauty, the Lemon Forest is a rare natural treasure protected under the international Ramsar Convention.
Back in 1828, Lemonodasos boasted nearly 10,000 lemon trees, producing around 8 million lemons per year. In later years, locals expanded cultivation to about 25,000 trees. Although its golden era lasted until the 1970s, when production was at its peak, today roughly half of these trees have been left untended. Still, the forest retains its magic — the air filled with the fragrance of citrus and the whispers of history.
In an attempt to save what is left today of the Lemon Forest and of their memories, a group of residents of Poros has founded the 'Friends of the Lemon Forest society'.
🍋 From great lemons come great creations
Even with limited production today, Lemonodasos continues to yield exceptional lemons, small, aromatic, and bursting with flavor. The people of Poros have turned these lemons into inspiration, creating a variety of artisan products: jams, limoncello, lemon biscuits, traditional lemonades, and pastries blended with Aegina pistachios.
Yet, the crown jewel of Poros’s lemon creations remains the lemon spoon sweet (glyko tou koutaliou me lemoni). Made from the island’s finest lemons, this traditional dessert captures the essence of the entire forest. Each spoonful carries the tang of the fruit, the scent of the blossoms, and the warmth of Greek hospitality.
